hehe i don't know any arabic except reading arabic...i'm turkish...in the course of the story turks have overtaken lots of arabic leanwords into their language, and shukran or shukur is one of them...that's why i know that shakira means thankful...if i'm not wrong there exists a male form of the name, too, shakir^^
