wow charlie parker is just amazing! he's got a great tone which flows easily from him and he's not even thinking about what he's playing because he know's his saxophone's capabilities so very very well. i'm a sax player and have been for 15 yrs. i wish i ciould play like he did! what a star!

Bird was always putting money in the jukebox to listen to country songs and he'd stop and listen to salvation army bands on the streets. He had an interest in all types of music. I'm thinking he'd find early Sth American pipe music very interesting also. Check out the harmony with these pipes. Seeing this makes Forest Whitaker's performance in "Bird" seem laughable. Clint Eastwood let him writhe around hunching his shoulders and what not as if he was about to have a seizure at any moment. In reality, C.P. looked as cool as he sounded. Maybe someday hollywood will make a good movie about Charlie Parker. I understand there is also a Chet Baker movie in the works, hopefully it will be directed by someone who can do his story justice?

my music teacher told me that bird played a gig once and was so horrible the drummer threw his cymbal at him, then bird just practiced incessantly all the time and since then and thats how he got so good. so just lock yourself in a room with a sax, maybe some water, for a couple years, you'll come out the next bird

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha i'll have to try that. he practised between 11hrs to 15hrs a day in order to improve. i know his neighbours hated it but what could he do? how he learned all the songs, i'll never know, because he never read a note of music in his life. he was very good though.

That stuff about him not being able to read music is bullshit. do you really think that the greatest alto sax player ever couldnt read music? he played in billy eckstines band for a while, which alone should tell you that he knew how to read also, charlie wasnt just some stupid sax player. he was extremely intelligent

the first people who started playing on the sax didn't even know what they were doing and they were pritty good so if you know how a sax works and know some chords you can do almost everything. You have to feel te music. I can't read music but I play really good on the piano. I play every week at a jazz caf

I agree - I didn't like the Bird movie either. Not enough about the music. But credit to Clint for making it, though. If it was going to be too 'purist' it wouldn't have been made at all - unfortunately.
